What is Directional Insanity? Well, if you’re a fan of a TV show called “The Good Place“, you might have heard Chidi Anagonye mention the phrase to describe his complete inability to avoid getting lost despite having clear directions. As with all good things, I have decided to re-purpose it.
As someone who has spent decades in digital marketing (dating back to 1996 believe it or not), I have seen it all when it comes to email marketing. There’s been some great stuff, some awful stuff, but the most common seems to be directionless stuff. Emails with no clear point to them other than to check off a marketing box.
Since I’ve been in the email game for a while, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the subject. I’ll drop some tips, throw out some ideas, and I’ll review a ton of emails (since I get quite a few of ’em on a daily basis).
As for the site design, a couple of things worth mentioning:
- I’m a pretty “no frills” kind of guy, so for the design of this site, I went as minimalist as possible.
- I wanted something that would be easy to manage and update.
- I’m not a graphic designer, so even if I wanted a site with lots of bells and whistles, I wouldn’t be able to DIY it without considerable effort.
Currently, there isn’t really a regular schedule for posting. When I see an email that I want to talk about (or have an email marketing topic I want to talk about), I’ll write. Some weeks I might post every day, other weeks I might not post at all. Also, it should be noted that everything I write on this site is on the fly. I don’t plan or outline and I don’t really proofread. If I see an email that I want to write about, I screenshot, I post, and I’m done.
For the record, the irony that I do not have an email opt-in on a site that is all about opt-in emails is not lost on me.
